Whalesong Hotel and Hydro

4 STAR PLETTENBERG BAY HOTEL RESORT
GARDEN ROUTE, WESTERN CAPE

Whalesong Hotel and Hydro boasts one of the most beautiful locations in the world - right along the world-acclaimed Garden Route. Situated in the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay ("Plett"), this hotel offers direct access to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, and only a few minutes from the centre of Plett. Whalesong Hotel and Hydro is situated above the centre of town and, as such, offers spectacular views across the bay to the mountains and ocean beyond.

While the décor of the hotel is sophisticated, inspiration was drawn from the African bush and this strong cultural element is manifested throughout the design and furnishings - from thatch roofs to ethnic art. The Boma is a key feature of Whalesong. These elements combine to create an authentic South African experience within the setting of opulent accommodation.

Plettenberg Bay was founded by Governor Joachim von Plettenberg, who incorporated the bay under the administrative sovereignty of the Dutch-East India Trading Company in 1778. Plett was initially used as a shipping port for the hardwood timber that was prevalent in the area. Later, a whaling station built, and was active until 1920.

Years before Van Riebeeck landed at the Cape, Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias charted the bay in 1487. 90 years later, Manuel da Perestrello followed. Da Perestrello aptly called this coastal town Bahia Formosa (the Bay Beautiful). The first white inhabitants were the 100 men stranded in Plett for 9 months after the San Gonzales sank in 1630. In 1763, the first white settlers in the Bay were stock farmers, hunters and frontiersmen from the Western Cape.
