The unique Protea Hotel Shakaland is a traditional Zulu homestead (or "Umuzi") which has been divided into hotel rooms and the home of the Zulu's. This hotel is built on the set of the films Shaka Zulu and John Ross. The authentic restoration of a traditional kraal, the Great Kraal, overlooks the Phobane Lake and provides an exciting experience of days past; the times of Shaka, King of the Zulus.

Guests of the Protea Hotel Shakaland experience true Zulu culture in the form of warriors with their assegaais, the spiritual insight of Sangomas, traditional dancing, spear-making and entire ceremonies of beer-drinking. These experiences are set off by unique accommodation - fully equipped beehive huts with luxurious en-suite bathrooms. All of these experiences and facilities are designed, not only to provide a novel approach to accommodation, but also to cultivate an appreciation of the rich Zulu culture.

Accommodation

The Protea Hotel Shakaland boasts 55 traditional beehive huts, each enjoying a private bathroom and shower, modern amenities and spectacular views. The School Centre can sleep up to 75 school children in traditional dormitory huts; a fun and exciting experience for children of all ages.

Facilities

Guests are invited to indulge in hearty meals and refreshing drinks at the Kwabonamanzi Restaurant and U Kamba Bar, from where diners are able to absorb the incredible views of the surrounding hills and landscape. Evenings are filled with traditional entertainment while watching traditional Zulu dancing. Alternatively, guests are able to relax in the audio-visual room.

Guests are sure to need a refreshing dip in the swimming pool in the hot African climate, situated adjacent to the restaurant. Parents are offered a professional baby-sitting service, which needs to be booked ahead of time. On-site curio shops and a 24-hour tea- and coffee-station ensure convenience and comfort for all of our valued guests.

Conference Facilities

The Protea Hotel Shakaland can accommodate between 50 to 120 delegates in the Conference Centre. This facility is ideal for dinners, cocktails or seminars.

Attractions

The Nandi Programme: A three-hour experience running from 11H00 to 14H00 or from 12H00 to 15H00.

The Shaka Programme: This programme is designed specifically for our overnight guests. Part I of the culture tour begins at l6h00 or 16H30, depending on the season, and is followed by Zulu dancing for an hour after dinner. Part II runs from 09h00 to l0h00 the next morning. The culture tour includes:

Shakaland is nestled between Eshowe and Melmoth in Zululand, towering on the top of the Entombeni Hills, and overlooking the Phobane Lake.

Directions

From Durban to Protea Hotel Shakaland:
  • Take the N2 North; veer off left at Dokodweni Toll Plaza onto the R66/Melmoth/Ulundi
  • 14km passed Eshowe turn off left to Shakaland, which is well signposted
