Services and Facilities
In addition to the in-room amenities, the Protea Hotel Kimberley also offers guests:
The Protea Hotel Kimberley is only one kilometre from the city centre of Kimberley with its cultural, historical and business attractions. This city is the capital of the Northern Cape Province and has always featured in the history of this country for its proliferation of diamonds. Guests of the hotel can walk to the Big Hole and Mine Museum, as well as several other popular tourist attractions.
The Big Hole is the world's largest hand-dug mine and is what has made the small town of Kimberley famous. Since it was first discovered, miners have dug to a depth of 215 metres into the earth, recovering more than 2700 kilograms of precious diamonds.
The Xun Khwe Wildebeestkuil Rock Art Project displays hundreds and hundreds of rock engravings left in the Kimberley mountain faces by this area's first inhabitants. The engravings tell a tale of crude implements and ancient rituals. There are various war memorials in and around Kimberley as well as museums and galleries dedicated to the lives and cultures of the indigenous people. These include the Peace and Justice Memorial, Cape Police Memorial, Honoured Dead Memorial, McGregor Memorial Museum and the Duggan-Cronin Gallery.
The hotel staff will be happy to arrange an archaeological tour for those who are fascinated by the remains of a fascinating world. Alternatively, guests can embark on a diamond field tour or a provincial legislature tour. Alternatively, explore the region's history by indulging in a cold ale at the Star of the West, one of the country's oldest pubs.
Bookworms should pay the Africana Library a visit. This is known as one of South Africa's best research libraries. Those who are more interested in immersing themselves in local culture will enjoy a township tour with Galeshewe. Kimberley locals love being outdoors and visitors are encouraged to partake in some fun and exciting outdoor activities. These include rugby, cricket, football, fly-fishing, hiking, game drives, horseback riding and more.
