Each rondavel, or thatched hut, is ethnically decorated and boasts more than the standard amenities for the convenience of each guest. There are outdoor showers for each hut, as well as a hairdryer, ceiling fan and safe. All openings are protected against insects. Two of the rondavels have king-size beds while four are equipped with twin beds. Couples with young children can arrange for a sleeper bed in their bedroom.
The Family Lodges are designed for families or small groups of friends. They are made up of two rooms with interleading access, one queen-size bed in one room and two single beds in the other. Upon prior arrangement, a sleeper bed can be put into one of these bedrooms as well. Each room has a private bathroom and an outdoor shower, as well as a hairdryer, safe and ceiling fan. Activities Being part of the Kruger National Park certainly places Mohlabetsi and the Balule Nature Reserve apart in terms of the sheer abundance of plants and animals that share this habitat. The Big 5 continues to attract visitors from all over the world, and refers to the Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhinoceros. In addition, Kruger has one of the best bird and reptile populations in the world, as well as intriguing insects. The vegetation of this area is classified as being wooded savannah. Rainfall is low and water is restricted to a few popular watering holes. This means that guests are sure to see some exciting species as they sip from these precious supplies. Mohlabetsi Lodge conducts private game drives for our valued guests. These are done in open-air Land Rovers that are both comfortable and safe. Being open means that there are no windows or doors between the passengers and the wild residents of the surrounding veld. The trained rangers provide added information and will gladly answer the questions of the guests. Should you prefer a closer encounter with Africa, take a meander through the bush on foot. The ranger will show you how to stalk an animal and identify certain birds and bugs. Alternatively, gaze at the multitude of stars in the high African skies with the aid of a knowledgeable ranger, laser pointer and telescope. The Tranquillity Lapa is the site of absolute relaxation and rejuvenation. Aromatherapy massages are administered by expert hands as guests are lulled into serenity by the natural sounds of the African bush. Dining After time spent under the warm African sun or exploring the crevices of the savannah, guests are sure to have worked up an appetite. The menu boasts fresh ingredients and local flavours, some even coming from the garden of the lodge itself. Local cuisine may be enjoyed around the fire in the Boma, or in the lodge's gorgeous gardens. Preferences and dietary requirements are accommodated as far as possible. Game Drives Upon arrival at lunchtime, guests are presented with a refreshing beverage, after which a light lunch is served. This is best enjoyed under the shade of one of the trees, or in the sunshine that is usually drenching the manicured lawn. This spot is chosen for its stunning views of the frequented waterhole. After lunch and an afternoon spent settling in and familiarising themselves, guests are taken for a late afternoon game drive in specially modified open Land Rovers. As these safe vehicles meander through the countryside, visitors are urged to take photographs and videos of the beautiful sights, creating for themselves lifelong memories of this stunning corner of the world. The ranger will stop the vehicle for guests to get a closer look along the way. At one of the vantage points, the group will stop to watch the sun descend over the African savannah while sipping on sundowners and enjoying some tasty snacks. On the way back to the lodge, passengers get to benefit from the darkness as the nocturnal creatures emerge from their hiding places in search of food and water. Leopards, Bush Babies and Genets are just some of these elusive residents. Once the sky is completely black, the ranger will share secrets and tales about the stars and galaxies, known as a Cosmic Safari. He uses a powerful telescope to reveal such mysteries. On return to the lodge, the guests will arrive to a campfire and dinner in the Boma, where they may share their stories and their day's experiences with fellow visitors. "Pot brood" (pot bread) is traditional African fare and is baked in a cast iron pot on the coals. This is served with the starters. The main meal follows and promises poultry and red meat accompanied by vegetables, all prepared on the fire. Dessert is usually a fruit flambé for an optimal balance between the sweet and healthy. On balmy summer nights, this affair is conducted in the open air. After a restful night's sleep, guests will be woken at the crack of dawn to enjoy coffee, tea and rusks in the seating area outside. The sunrise game drive will then commence, broken only by a guided walk through the bushveld, which promises a new perspective. Once the sun is firmly established in the daytime sky, guests will return to Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge for a delicious breakfast, complemented by home-made preserves and other treats. The lodge has become famous for its popular Marula Jelly. Directions The Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge is situated seven kilometres from the R40, just above Hoedspruit. On the road between the Panorama Route and the Blyde River Canyon, the lodge is accessible via the Abel Erasmus Pass. Two of the Kruger National Park's gates, the Orpen and the Phalaborwa, are a mere 80 kilometres from the lodge. Directions from Johannesburg - 4½ hours
