Marataba is an opulent game lodge that represents Africa in essence, décor and history. Modern design meets authentic African charm and culture in combination with a mystic aura. Locally sourced stone, sand and soil has been used in the construction of the building, creating a uniquely African experience. Glass walls complete the experience as guests are able to enjoy spectacular views and the natural sounds with minimal interruption.
Marataba Lodge was inspired by the discovery of primeval ruins and is thus able to combine modernity with an ancient ambience. This is achieved by using architecture and technology in a truly innovative way, in line with the African Renaissance. The silent lure of the bush, the authority of the mountains and the pounding footsteps of the mighty animals that have made their home here await the discerning guest.
The owners of Hunter Hotel plan to add two add two gorgeous lodges to Marataba Lodge within the next few years. Each of these lodges will maintain the high standard of service and accommodation, ensuring that the Hunters Hotel group's standard is never negotiated.
Twelve luxurious tents combine stone and canvas to create a truly African experience, without compromising on quality. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of Africa, these suites are the ideal base from which to explore the fantastic continent.
Each comfortable tent boasts interesting en-suite bathrooms equipped with a bath, shower, 'His' and 'Hers' basins and a dressing room. Private decks overlook the incredible plains and the winding river below. Additional amenities include must-see outside showers, ceiling fans to ensure ultimate comfort, and in-house communication.
Stone has been used in effective combination with vast expanses of glass in order to benefit from the incredible surrounds and evoke a sense of ancient Africa. Cocktails are best enjoyed from the Ladies Bar. Alternatively, the spacious lounges or library provide fantastic retreats from the city life.
The menu is varied and boasts a combination of African flavours, to be enjoyed in the chic dining room, on the verandah or in the outside boma, under the towering African sky. Break hot summer days with a cool dip in the refreshing swimming pool. The Guest Business Centre at Marataba Lodge provides corporate guests with convenient amenities amid African charm.
At Marataba Lodge, we advise that guests check in at midday to benefit from the tasty lunch (served between 12h30 and 14h00). After a hearty lunch, enjoy an afternoon nap in the opulence of the tented suites, have a dip in the swimming pool, or relax in the warm hospitality of the African bushveld. Luxurious living necessitates a High Tea, followed by a guided game drive. Gorgeous sunsets are an ideal backdrop to a refreshing cocktail, followed by a delicious dinner, served between 19h30 and 20h00.
The wild sounds of Africa lull our guests into a deep sleep, broken only by a wake-up call in time for breakfast, and the morning game drive (or walk). Day trips to Marakele's Endangered Species Project can be arranged at Marataba Lodge.
Guests are requested to check out by 12h00 on the day of departure.
Marataba comprises 23 000 hectares of private concession in Marakele National Park in Limpopo. Being endowed with expansive plains, teeming bush, rivers, gorges and mountains, this area is a sanctuary to Africa's Big Five, as well as many of their tamer counterparts, including the rare roan, sable and mountain reedbuck as well as the endangered Cape Vulture. Avid birders are richly rewarded as they witness over 400 bird species within the park. Significantly, Marataba Lodge is in a malaria-free area.
The Marataba Safari Company is made up of 23 000 hectares of concession, and lies in the eastern part of Marakele National Park, and at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains. It is a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg, in western Limpopo. Thabazimbi, Rustenburg and Ellisras are all within easy proximity.
By Road: Travel to Thabazimbi from Johannesburg, either via Brits or Warmbaths. From there, travel along the R510 north for 32.2km, and turn right at the Lephalale sign. After 11.3km, take a right into Rooiberg Road. After 8.2km, turn left into the Marataba Safari Company gateway. Marataba is only 310km from Johannesburg International Airport (OR Tambo). Road transfers can be arranged and quoted for accordingly. Car rental options are available from Johannesburg Airport and other major centres.
By Air: Should guests wish to access Marataba Lodge by air, charter flights can be arranged between Marakele and all major centres (including Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route and Gorah Elephant Camp).
South African summers extend from October to March and are usually hot and fairly drive. Daytime temperatures usually reach a high of 28ºC and a night-time low of about 12ºC. January and February are the hottest months, with average temperatures of approximately 32ºC. Rainfall in this region is usually during summer afternoons and averages 570mm per annum. Winters see cold nights and early mornings (around 2ºC to 6ºC), but even winter days are pleasant.
We advise guests to bring warm clothing, even during summer, as the early mornings and late evenings may get a little chilly, especially on game drives. Absolute isolation means no cellphone reception, so cellphones are best left in a safe place during your stay at Marataba Lodge.
