Facilities The observation deck provides a perfect spot from which to view the river and all of the wildlife and birds that have established their homes here. All facilities are designed to create a venue in which guests may relax, and take in the genuine ambience of Africa. These include:
Activities Game drives are conducted in the early morning, and late afternoon in open Land Cruisers. Night spotlight game drives, coupled with and star gazing presentations, are a fantastic after-dinner activity and allow guests a wildlife experience very different to that of daytime tours. Tours to the local village can also be arranged for a cultural experience of the area and local population. Guided safari walks along the Khwai River are conducted by qualified guides. Back at the lodge, a hide overlooks the Khwai floodplains and offers a welcome break from the ever-bustling city environment. The swimming pool, gym and spa are equally indulgent escapes, encouraging our guests to relax and enjoy the efficient and discreet service of the lodge. Spa treatments can be enjoyed at the spa, or in the comfort of their own rooms. Bird watching at Khwai River Lodge Situated right on the banks of the Khwai River, this venue is the only place where birds are able to find water all year round. The raptor population in this area is most noteworthy and includes Martiale Agles, Secretary Birds, Bateleurs and an array of little Raptors. Water birds have made their home on these banks and, because this river is fairly open, these and other birds are easily visibly. Eager birders should look out for Purple Gallinule, Saddle Billed Stork, Black Stork, Kingfishers, Slatey Egret and little Waders. The woodlands that surround this area are made up mainly of Mopane. This bird-rich area includes Arnot's Chat and Hartlub's Babblers. An excursion to Xaxanka transports travellers to part of the permanent swamp. Khwai River Lodge boasts over 300 of bird species and guests should enjoy at least two nights at this camp to benefit from this array. Khwai is also home to an exotic collection of game, and guests are guaranteed to see an impressive range of animals, including the elusive leopard. The Area Moremi Reserve is nestled right in the heart of the Okavango Delta. It was also the first wildlife area to be set aside by the local tribal people, rather than colonial powers of the time. Robert Kay, a local Maun resident during the 1960's, initiated the establishment of a game reserve in the Delta and, after correspondence with the Game Officer of Bechuanaland protectorate, the Fauna Preservation Society in London, and a meeting with the Batawana tribe, the Fauna Conservation Society of Ngamiland was formed in 1962. The Batawana Tribal Administration approved setting up a reserve in the Khwai/Mogohelo area in 1963. A press appeal was launched at the same time in London, in conjunction with the World Wildlife Fund and attended by Chief Designate Letsholathebe Moremi. The reserve was later named after him - "Moremi Wildlife Reserve". The reserve officially began in 1964 with only nine game guards, three Land Rovers and a five ton lorry. The total gate receipts for 1966 totalled only P785 (this is now the price that two adults with one vehicle will pay per night to stay in a Moremi public campsite), so the beginnings were slow. However, by the early 1970's, there was a dramatic increase in tourism, with a total of 4,500 visitors in 1971. The late 1970's saw the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) take responsibility for the management and the government for administration, enabling the government to take a share of gate revenues. The reserve has been extended twice, and now occupies 4871km2. This reserve is the only area of the Okavango Delta that is protected by the law. It is also surrounded by land that is controlled in terms of wildlife management. To allow free movement of the wildlife that is resident to the park during their migration times, there are no fences on the borders. Moremi extends to the east and north to join Chobe National Park, ensuring a continuous area of protected land all the way to Kasane.
