| D'Ouwe Werf's restaurant, the "1802 Restaurant", presents a menu of both traditional South African dishes and more exotic International cuisine. The extensive winelist is tailored to satisfy the palate of all discerning wine-drinkers. Guests are invited to bask in the warm South African sunshine as they enjoy coffee and our famous cheesecake at our coffee shop under the vines.
Relax in the lush gardens with a sundowner, bronze yourself on the wooden deck, or enjoy the treat of a dip in the heated swimming pool. For the more vigorous guests, golf courses, tours to the wine farms, historical tours through the town of Stellenbosch, shops and boutiques, museums, and art galleries are all within close proximity to this luxury hotel. Accommodation d'Ouwe Werf offers four types of rooms in the five buildings making up the property. These rooms overlook the exquisite courtyard and garden or the quaint Church Street. The four types of rooms are available in double or twin and are classified as Classic, Luxury, Superior or Governors. Accommodation at d'Ouwe Werf is a retreat after a busy day of conducting business or site-seeing in and around Stellenbosch. Settle next to the comforting fire in our resident's lounge, "de Kromme Elleboog" ("the raised elbow"), while appreciating a fine port. The private courtyard is a serene retreat after a day of activity, or the perfect locale to reflect on what the day ahead may hold.
Classic Rooms are our standard rooms and are available in either double (5 rooms) or twin (5 rooms), ideal for smaller groups of travellers. They are equipped with a bath/shower combination, and enjoy unique décor with classic antique pieces. For further convenience to family travellers, we also have one set of Classic Rooms with an interleading door. Luxury Rooms Our Luxury Rooms enjoy true old-world style, being situated in the original building, which dates back to 1802. These rooms are spacious and also boast unique décor enriched by valuable antique furniture. This section was completely renovated in 2006. D'Ouwe Werf has 5 double rooms and 4 twin rooms as part of the Luxury Rooms, all of which have a bath / shower combination. Luxurious bathrooms are in Georgian or Victorian décor. Superior Rooms Our 9 Superior Rooms were refurbished in 2006 and feature modern décor with a traditional Cape-style twist. Superior Rooms are large, and offer the convenience and comfort of a separate bath and shower. The exception to this rile is the Honeymoon Suite, which offers newly-weds a large, romantic shower. There are 3 double rooms and 6 twin rooms constituting the Superior Rooms offered at this luxury hotel. Governor Rooms The Governor Rooms are the latest addition to the offerings of d'Ouwe Werf hotel, and also offer modern Cape-style décor. These 4 rooms are named after some of the first governors in the Cape, including Van Riebeeck and Van der Stel. These luxurious rooms are large, and ensure that guests always feel spoilt and comfortable. Made up of 1 double room and 3 twin rooms, all Governor Rooms are equipped with a walk-in dressing room, and a large bathroom with heated floors and towel rails. Dining The d'Ouwe Werf restaurant was opened in 1982 and has since earned the reputation of being a culinary landmark in the area. This eatery was renamed 1802 @ d'Ouwe Werf and experienced a full renovation during 2003 - 2006 to stay abreast with its reputation in an ever-advancing town. While never negotiating on professionalism and quality, regular guests are encouraged to unwind and enjoy the relaxed, homely atmosphere. The varied menu consists of both traditional and Continental cuisine. Executive Chef, Liza Engelbrecht, has been with the restaurant since 2003, and has cultivated a loyal clientele based on this quality dining experience. Overnight guests of d'Ouwe Werf are treated to a morning spread of cereals, fruits, juices, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, muffins, toast & croissants, followed by a choice of warm dishes. Tea and filter coffee are also available. Whatever the weather, guests are guaranteed ultimate comfort. Cold winter months are cosy when enjoyed by the fireplace with a comforting port. The African summer is soothed by sitting under the vine-covered courtyard and sipping on some of South Africa's finest wines from the wine-of-origin winelist. Location Directions From Airport via the N2 A few hundred meters after exiting the airport, follow the signs leading to the N2 motorway east to Somerset West. After some 13km on the N2, turn left at the signposted Helderberg/Baden Powell Drive/R310 turn-off (exit 33) in the direction of Stellenbosch, which is signposted at the top of the turn-off. Follow the R310 for 15km to the T-junction, having passed some wine estates and the Van Rhyn Brandy Cellar on the way. At the T-junction, turn right to Stellenbosch. Continue on this road past the first set of traffic lights, until the second set of traffic lights. Turn right here into Dorp Street. Follow Dorp Street for some 1.5 km past another set of traffic lights and two small traffic roundabouts/circles, signposted as 'mini traffic circles'. Continuing past the second mini circle (signposted as Bird Street), turn left at the third street, which is Drostdy Street. Turn left at the first intersection into Church Street. Our hotel is located at Number 30, which is on the right side about 100metres down. There is a valet parking service available, for which you would first need to announce yourself at the hotel's reception desk. From Cape Town City Centre (Adderley Street) Follow Adderley street towards the harbour, across two roundabouts / traffic circles and turn right to travel to the N1 motorway. Follow the N1 out of Cape Town until you see the sign marked R304 Stellenbosch/ Klipheuwel and take this turn off to your left. At the following Stop sign, turn right onto the R304. Follow this road until you reach the intersection of the R44 and Bird Street (the R304 changes over to Bird Street once you reach Stellenbosch). Turn right onto the R44 and drive to the fourth traffic light. Take the Dorp Street turn-off to your left and follow for some 1.5 km past another set of traffic lights and two small traffic roundabouts/circles, signposted as 'mini traffic circles'. Continuing past the second mini circle (signposted as Bird Street), turn left at the third street, which is Drostdy Street. Turn left at the first intersection into Church Street. Our hotel is located at Number 30, which is on the right side about 100 metres down. There is a valet parking service available, for which you would first need to announce yourself at the hotel's reception desk. Please note: Street signs in town are on the curb at intersections. |
