d'Ouwe Werf is South Africa's oldest and most historic hotel, established in 1802 in the heart of the Cape Winelands. This hotel has set the hospitality and fine dining standards in South Africa for centuries. Esteemed guests are invited to enjoy the splendour of the Cape from the comfort of the luxurious lodgings of d'Ouwe Werf. Situated in the historically-rich university town of Stellenbosch, this opulent accommodation is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the Western Cape, and is only 45km from the tourism-hotspots of Cape Town. Alternatively, enjoy the relaxation of a trip to the beach, situated 20km from the hotel, or to the many winefarms of Stellenbosch, known as the premier wine region of South Africa.
Georgian-style décor lends d'Ouwe Werf the elegant ambience of yesteryear, perfectly suited to its location on the peaceful Church Street. A well-fused combination of antique furniture and convenient, modern facilities ensures that guests of Stellenbosch are accommodated in warm, hospitable surrounds.
Each of the 32 room is en-suite and decorated individually. Friendly staff and convenient amenities guarantee a comfortable, luxurious experience in the Western Cape of South Africa.
|D'Ouwe Werf's restaurant, the "1802 Restaurant", presents a menu of both traditional South African dishes and more exotic International cuisine. The extensive winelist is tailored to satisfy the palate of all discerning wine-drinkers. Guests are invited to bask in the warm South African sunshine as they enjoy coffee and our famous cheesecake at our coffee shop under the vines.
Relax in the lush gardens with a sundowner, bronze yourself on the wooden deck, or enjoy the treat of a dip in the heated swimming pool. For the more vigorous guests, golf courses, tours to the wine farms, historical tours through the town of Stellenbosch, shops and boutiques, museums, and art galleries are all within close proximity to this luxury hotel.
d'Ouwe Werf offers four types of rooms in the five buildings making up the property. These rooms overlook the exquisite courtyard and garden or the quaint Church Street. The four types of rooms are available in double or twin and are classified as Classic, Luxury, Superior or Governors.
Accommodation at d'Ouwe Werf is a retreat after a busy day of conducting business or site-seeing in and around Stellenbosch. Settle next to the comforting fire in our resident's lounge, "de Kromme Elleboog" ("the raised elbow"), while appreciating a fine port. The private courtyard is a serene retreat after a day of activity, or the perfect locale to reflect on what the day ahead may hold.
Classic Rooms are our standard rooms and are available in either double (5 rooms) or twin (5 rooms), ideal for smaller groups of travellers. They are equipped with a bath/shower combination, and enjoy unique décor with classic antique pieces. For further convenience to family travellers, we also have one set of Classic Rooms with an interleading door.
Our Luxury Rooms enjoy true old-world style, being situated in the original building, which dates back to 1802. These rooms are spacious and also boast unique décor enriched by valuable antique furniture. This section was completely renovated in 2006. D'Ouwe Werf has 5 double rooms and 4 twin rooms as part of the Luxury Rooms, all of which have a bath / shower combination. Luxurious bathrooms are in Georgian or Victorian décor.
Our 9 Superior Rooms were refurbished in 2006 and feature modern décor with a traditional Cape-style twist. Superior Rooms are large, and offer the convenience and comfort of a separate bath and shower. The exception to this rile is the Honeymoon Suite, which offers newly-weds a large, romantic shower. There are 3 double rooms and 6 twin rooms constituting the Superior Rooms offered at this luxury hotel.
The Governor Rooms are the latest addition to the offerings of d'Ouwe Werf hotel, and also offer modern Cape-style décor. These 4 rooms are named after some of the first governors in the Cape, including Van Riebeeck and Van der Stel. These luxurious rooms are large, and ensure that guests always feel spoilt and comfortable. Made up of 1 double room and 3 twin rooms, all Governor Rooms are equipped with a walk-in dressing room, and a large bathroom with heated floors and towel rails.
The d'Ouwe Werf restaurant was opened in 1982 and has since earned the reputation of being a culinary landmark in the area. This eatery was renamed 1802 @ d'Ouwe Werf and experienced a full renovation during 2003 - 2006 to stay abreast with its reputation in an ever-advancing town. While never negotiating on professionalism and quality, regular guests are encouraged to unwind and enjoy the relaxed, homely atmosphere. The varied menu consists of both traditional and Continental cuisine. Executive Chef, Liza Engelbrecht, has been with the restaurant since 2003, and has cultivated a loyal clientele based on this quality dining experience.
Overnight guests of d'Ouwe Werf are treated to a morning spread of cereals, fruits, juices, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, muffins, toast & croissants, followed by a choice of warm dishes. Tea and filter coffee are also available.
Whatever the weather, guests are guaranteed ultimate comfort. Cold winter months are cosy when enjoyed by the fireplace with a comforting port. The African summer is soothed by sitting under the vine-covered courtyard and sipping on some of South Africa's finest wines from the wine-of-origin winelist.
