The Western Cape Hotel & Spa at the Arabella Golf Estate in Hermanus / Kleinmond is delighted to announce the completion on the re-construction of the par-four 6th, which has long been seen as the one weak hole at Arabella, with its blind tee shot and difficult approach.

Arabella Golf Course designer Peter Matkovich was called in to redesign the fairway so that now, most of the hole can be seen from the tee. Major earthworks took place a couple of months ago with tons of clay and koffieklip being carted away. The result is a much improved view from the tee. With no changes to the greens complex, the hole is not much easier, but certainly somewhat fairer. The fairway and semi-rough have recently been sodded and the hole will be ready for play by November.

The Nelson Mandela Invitational, presented by Coca-Cola and hosted by Gary Player returned to the Arabella Golf Estate at the Western Cape Hotel & Spa for the third time from 25 to 27 November.

There were some new faces at Arabella this year, including World No 5 and two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen, who replaces the injured Ernie Els.

Mark McNulty, who is no stranger to the Sunshine Tour and who is playing so successfully on the Champions Tour in the US will be another new face this year, and popular BBC radio personality DJ Spoony will both be making a first trip.

There were, of course, some familiar faces: Ronan Keating returned, as did former Lancome Ines Sastre, while Charl Schwartzel and Omar Sandys returned as Sunshine Tour nominees.

The Nelson Mandela Invitational is about extending a helping hand and has raised in excess of R15 million in its first five years for its two beneficiaries, The Player Foundation and Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

The Western Cape Hotel & Spa, South Africa

The Arabella Golf Course which is located at the Western Cape Hotel & Spa has been rated as the second best golf course in South Africa by Compleat Golfer in its latest course rankings.

The Arabella Golf Course is therefore a top course in the Western Cape, a considerable achievement when you consider some of the competition, especially along the Garden Route.

What is particularly pleasing is that Compleat Golfer has added an environmental component to this year’s rankings and Arabella Golf Club was well ahead of any other course in the country.
